Roses


Roses are the garden's most enduring icon. From the long-distant past come the scent, shape, and color that form this contradiction: thorny branches and soft, delicate aromatic petals. Our language reflects our love affair with the rose — its thorns and brambles symbolize roughness, while its petals have come to represent tenderness and softness.

We in Southeast Alaska have fewer types that thrive, but that does not lessen our desire. The last decade has seen an explosion in hardy roses fueled mostly by a series of Canadian breeding programs aimed at reducing leaf disease and increasing winter hardiness.
