It is in our nature to prefer some plants to others. For some of the elect it is their inherent qualities; that they thrive in our settings, that their flowers or fruit are pleasing, or that they perform a certain task admirably.
There is another category, plants that can only be coaxed into surviving with the greatest effort, and even then sometimes they fail. We grow these plants because we cannot stand to be without them. They remind us of other times and places, they were a gift from someone near and dear, or they grew in a garden we remember with great affection.
The plants shown on the following pages are mostly of the former category; plants that will thrive here with basic care and a modicum of good weather. This is not an exhaustive list, just a sprinkling of a few good species.
